Causes of Chronic Dry Eyes

There are many potential causes of dry eye syndrome. These include:

  • Smoking
  • Taking certain medications
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Pregnancy

However, dry eye syndrome can occur in people who do not have any of these underlying conditions. When you come in for an exam, an optometrist on our optometry team will ask you some questions in an attempt to determine the underlying cause of your dry eyes. This is because you may be able to overcome this issue by simply making some lifestyle changes.

Symptoms of Chronic Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome causes several different symptoms, most commonly eye irritation and redness. You may also feel like you have something stuck in your eye. Dry eye syndrome can even cause discharge from your eyes, especially when it is secondary to an eye infection like conjunctivitis (pink eye). Blepharitis is another eye condition that may cause dry eyes.

Dry Eye Treatment

There are multiple effective treatments available for dry eye syndrome. The first-line treatment often involves lifestyle changes and the use of over-the-counter eye drops. If this does not work, an optometrist on our team may prescribe medicinal eye drops. In severe cases that do not respond to these treatments, surgery may be necessary. If this is the case, we can refer you to an ophthalmologist.
