Examples of an Eye Infection

There are many types of eye infections, including:

  • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): This is an inflammation of the thin layer that covers the white part of your eye. Viruses, bacteria and allergens can cause it. Symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, and discharge.
  • Keratitis: Also known as corneal ulcers, keratitis is an infection of the cornea. It can be caused by a bacterial or fungal infection, leading to scarring, vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Symptoms include redness, pain, excessive tearing and sensitivity to light.
  • Blepharitis: This is an inflammation of the eyelids which can be caused by bacteria, viruses or allergies. Symptoms include redness, itching, burning and crusting of the eyelids.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: This is a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears to keep them lubricated. Symptoms include redness, irritation and a feeling of grittiness in the eyes.

How Does an Optometrist Diagnose Eye Infections?

With help from an eye exam, our optometrist can diagnose any type of eye infection. We will use a combination of tests to check your vision and look for signs of infection. These tests include:

  • Slit lamp exam - this is a special microscope that allows us to see inside the eye more closely
  • Tonometry test - this measures the pressure in your eye
  • Visual acuity test - this measures how well you can see
  • Retinal examination - this looks for signs of infection in your retina and other tissues
  • Corneal scraping - this is a procedure where a sample of corneal tissue is taken to be analyzed under the microscope.

Once the diagnosis has been made, our optometrist will work with you to develop a treatment plan. This may include medications such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs or possibly even surgery. The goal is to reduce inflammation and improve your vision so that you can get back to living life as normal.
